Got a little time to kill

I had a dinner planned with a friend tonight, but he had to cancel at the last minute. Normally, I’d go home, but I have another meeting planned at 7:00pm, and if I go home I probably won’t make it to my next meeting. My couch tends to draw me over and suck me in when I go home. When that happens, I get lazy and probably fall asleep. That means I miss the meeting, and I don’t want to do that. Read more on Got a little time to kill…

Oh. My. Goodness. This. Is. Good. Ice. Cream.

I’m sitting here (free WiFi for the win!) at the world’s best ice cream and frozen treats place. Atomic #7 offers an amzing variety of frozen goodies, and they’re all made fresh in front of you. Nothing is frozen until it’s ordered. Once ordered, the ingredients are all mixed in liqud form and then quick frozen with liquid nitrogen. Hydrogen being the 7th atomic elemnt, lends it’s coldness to freeze your ice cream in addition to being integral to the name.

Nitrogen frozen ice cream is amazing stuff. The process creates a smooth and lush texture with any of the seven “milk” bases Atomic #7 offers. Even almond milk, which doesn’t make terribly smooth and creamy traditional ice cream comes out creamy and smooth. Regular cream is tranformed into something that Ben & Jerry can only aspire to make. Hey there Tweety!

Sorry for meaningless posts, but isn’t that what all this Web 2.0 goodness is really about?

I wonder if this makes it to my Twitter account….

iPad posting

I got an iPad a few days after they were released and I’m constantly amazed at the cool (and usually free) apps that are out for it. I can now write posts pretty much anywhere for my lovely but usued blog. Not sure if this will get me posting more, but it can’t hurt.

Dear Massachusetts

Dear Massachusetts,

Well done. Thank you for making a wise choice.

I sincerely hope this is a step toward taking control of this country away form the looters and destroyers on both sides of the aisle.

I have seen the future of the web and it is shiny [UPDATED]

Web 2.0 is here. Sure, it’s the future of the Internet, but since the Internet waits for nobody, we need to deal with this wonderful future technology now. Why? Well, mainly because it’s here. This doesn’t even take into account Web 3.0, but since it’s a real future technology, not a future technology of today, I’m not worrying about it yet. Breakfast of Champions

I went to lunch with a friend and Las Vegas blogger Hurricane Mikey yesterday. He actually writes in his blog, as opposed to me. I just pay hosting fees and occasionally pop in with something interesting to say or (more probably) something to complain about.

Anyway, I heartily encourage you to visit his blog and read around a bit. It’s very interesting reading, and I’m happy to wait right here while you’re out reading his stuff.

One thing about Mikey, he likes his pizza, and one of his life’s journeys is to find the perfect pie. It’s kind of a religious quest, and it’s fun to be a pilgrim. But this entry isn’t really about Mikey so much as my small part in that journey to coal-fired nirvana. Read more on Breakfast of Champions…

Fry’s price matching works!

I’m genuinely surprised in a happy way.

Fry’s has a price matching policy. It’s not plastered all over the store, but I found it on the good ol’ Interweb after a short search:

If within 30 days of purchasing an item from Fry’s you see a lower in-stock price at a local competitor with a low price guarantee, Fry’s will cheerfully refund 110% of the amount of the competitor’s low price guarantee. Or, if within 30 days of purchase, a local Fry’s, or a local competitor without a low price guarantee has a lower price, Fry’s will refund 100% of the difference.

NOTE: All comparisons are based on price, excluding any applicable sales tax. Low price guarantee for notebook computers, microprocessors, memory, CD and DVD recorders, camcorders, digital cameras, and air conditioners is within 15 days from purchase date. To apply for Fry’s low price guarantee, simply bring in your original cash register receipt and verifiable proof of a current lower price.

*All comparisons are based on in-store tagged price at the time of request, excluding sales tax. Offer good on all fresh-boxed products of the same exact model in stock at a local competitor. We reserve the right to limit this offer to one of each model. Offer does not apply to wireless phones and pagers that require a service agreement. Offer does not apply when price includes bonus or free offers or one-of-a-kind or limited-quantity offers.
NOTE: Does not apply to expired ads. Fry’s ads valid for only stores listed in the ad.

Last night I bought a GPS unit for my car. The price was $399.99. It was a bit of an impulse purchase, but was within my budget and seemed reasonable. I didn’t really do much research other than trying to find my home address (in a 2-year-old development) on different units to see how fresh the maps were. This was the only one that had it. Wanna sell me something? Think carefully about how you do it…

ARRGH! An insistent little person just rang my doorbell trying to get me to use her carpet cleaning service. Um … no … I don’t think so. I told her nicely that there is no solicitation in this neighborhood and she should probably leave. Now.

In case her boss reads this site, here goes: Read more on Wanna sell me something? Think carefully about how you do it……

Telemarketing scum: Wizard Carpet Cleaners of Las Vegas

I loathe telemarketing calls. That’s why our home phone is on the National Do Not Call Registry. When a telemarketer calls, I alert them to this fact and ask them to remove our number from their list. They usually apologize, and we never hear from them again. Fair enough. Mistakes happen.

Something Else I Don’t Need

As I cruise the Information Highway I see lots of stuff. Some of it is pretty useful and other things leave me scratching my head and wondering, “Why?”

I’ll let you guess where I stand on the following product.

It’s called the VroomBox and claims to make your plain old boring car, their example is a Toyota Sienna minivan, sound like something a bit more powerful and exotic, say a Lamborghini V12 or Shelby Cobra. How does this miracle of technology work? Pretty simple, it hooks into your engine’s tachometer connector and then send a sound signal out to an amplifier and speakers you need to provide. Merry Christmas from the Vargases

Christmas brings up so many fond memories of turkeys at Grandma’s, her special stuffing, presents, and happy family times. Memories of snow, cold, and even some bad weather. So many wonderful memories, and too many to mention here.

An open letter to the Lexus drivers of the world

Dear Fellow Driver:

Hi there! I’m another driver on the road. Just like you, I’m using the paved conduit to get form point A to point B. I know this may surprise you, since when you paid twice the going price of a Toyota for a Toyota with a badge that looks like a rip-off of the Mercedes-Benz logo, you thought you bought the road as well.

I also hate to tell you, but the ES300 didn’t remove the stink from your shit. Neither did the LX470, so no smiling over there, OK? Read more on An open letter to the Lexus drivers of the world…

Check Your Stats, You Might Be Missing Something

The say that Google page rank is everything on the Internet these days, and that getting it is somewhat of a black science. I don’t write these pages with any particular page ranking in mind. Since “Lars Vargas” is a fairly uncommon name, I tend to rank pretty high (usually at the top) when searched in Google. That’s nice, but expected. Getting into “Las Vegas Blogs” is a lot harder. I checked once, and I’m at around 700 or 800. Probably lower.

One of the things I do check every so often is my site stats. It’s nice to see how much traffic this site gets (not much right now), where it’s coming from (mostly other pages on this site) and various other tidbits. One of those tidbits is what search terms landed visitors on your pages. All the things you would think would be there are: Lars Vargas, Mrs. Vargas, Luella the cat, etc. Many of those are my searches to see if I’m in certain search engines and such. The Christmas Decorations Are Up

That’s right, it’s a “Christmas” theme. Not a “Holiday” theme. I’m totally not into that politically correct crap, where we cannot possible offend anyone for any reason, or exclude them. Then again, I never did anything to exclude anyone. They pretty much excluded themselves. But this isn’t about PC blanding everything into a homogenous gray slurry. It’s about decorating for the holidays.

The New Site Design Is Up

It’s amazing how a little spare time evaporates quickly and a quick project turns into one that takes much longer than anticipated. But such is life.

The re-styles theme for the site is up. As usual, there are a few rough edges that will smooth out over the next few days.

Minor Makeover, More to Come

I have a little bit of spare time to play with the site’s design. The original Lars Vargas design was something I threw together in a few hours in order to get a site up and going. It’s rough around the edges at best, ugly at worst.

Wacky from Waxing

Las Vegas is a great place to live. We moved here for a variety of reasons. One was the weather. No hurricanes, not a lot of rain. In fact, other than the intense summer (dry) heat, Las Vegas has a very hospitable climate.

While some would say that the lack of rain is one of the good things about Las Vegas (it is in the middle of a desert after all) there are some disadvantages as well. The largest one would be dust. Vegas is a dusty town, and a little wind will move more than enough dust to cover pretty much everything, cars included.

My car is black. I like black cars. That Darth Vader thing is cool to me. But dust and black cars don’t mix. Actually, they mix quite well, but the look of a black car covered in fine beige silt isn’t nearly as sinister as when that black paint is gleaming like the Dark Side of the Force. Thank you, Veterans!

We all need to take a few moments today and reflect on what we have. And after we’ve done that, we need to think about who sacrificed to make it all possible.

Ok, so what IS this mess?

Well, this mess, bless its little heart, is a blog. You probably know what that is, but in the interest of complete disclosure and adding a few extra words to the page, a “blog” is a “weblog”, or someone’s log on the web.

There are lots of different kinds of logs: Yule Logs, Lincoln Logs, wood logs, even Log Cabin syrup. A weblog is the kind where someone types up pretty much whatever comes to mind. Some are well-organized and well-trafficked. Others languish in a weird narcissistic soup of self-loathing and pity.

This weblog has just been started by me, Lars Vargas, and there isn’t much to it yet. First of all, the template still needs a bit of fine tuning, so you’re going to see a few rough edges here. And yeah, the style sheets aren’t done yet either. That’s part of fine tuning. Read more on Ok, so what IS this mess?…
